Want to get involved? Consider becoming a Committee Lead in 2019/2020!

Updated May 18, 2019

Even though the "C" in BSCO stands for Community, it could also easily stand for Committee because without the efforts of our Committee Leads and Committee volunteers, BSCO would not be able to provide the amazing variety of enriching activities that our students have come to love and the resources on which our school has come to rely.

Please consider volunteering your time by becoming a Committee Lead.  It's a great way to meet other parents, get more involved with the school, and share a skill or talent.

Don't be intimidated by the commitment.  Time commitments vary!  We can find a way for you to get involved in a way that works best for your interests and bandwidth.

Don't want to go it alone? Get a few of your BBFFs (Best BonnySlope Forever Friends) together and tag team the job. The more the merrier!!

The positions that are open for 2019/2020 include:

  • Auction - Chair this Annual Spring Fundraiser

  • Carnival - Be part of the team that plans the annual Bonny Slope Carnival in the spring!

  • Community Garden - Assemble a team of green thumbs to help the students learn about how to tend to the organic garden on the Bonny Slope campus.

  • Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) - Coordinate the reading program for 4th & 5th graders.

Co-Leads Needed - this means there is already a lead, but they need a wing-man or woman!

  • Science Night - Encourage student projects and coordinate vendors to excite our kiddos about science.

  • Yearbook- Preserve these amazing memories forever in our annual yearbook celebrating each school year.

Please contact BSCO's Director of Committees, Katie Kammer, at committees@bonnyslopebsco.org if you have any questions about a particular position or are interested in leading one of these amazing opportunities.

For more information on each committee please see the BSCO Volunteer Handbook.

Kids Had S'more Fun with Books at Annual Book Fair

Happy campers filled the library last week to take part in the Winter Scholastic Book Fair – S’more Fun with Books.  With every purchase directly benefiting our school, we were able to raise $7,865 (55 percent of the total $14,300 sold in books and extras).  The school will use the funds to buy books for the library, as well as needed items such as headphones and classroom equipment.

The event was very well attended and that meant some of the very popular books had to continually be restocked.  Making Bombs for Hitler quickly became a must-have book for many of the 4th and 5th graders, along with Bailey's Story: A Dog’s Purpose Novel, Dog Man, The Bad Guys, and Pig the Pug

In addition to the traditional book fair, BSE hosted and “All for Books” event from Jan. 30 – Feb. 10 to benefit the Beaverton Clothes Closet, a nonprofit organization that provides clothes, books, and other items to vulnerable children in our community. Each classroom was given an empty jar and kids were encouraged to bring in spare change to fill the jar.  The money collected was used to buy Book Fair books, which were donated to the nonprofit.  As the two classrooms to collect the most change, Ms. Johnson and Mr. Hammond’s classes were given $100 to spend on books for their classroom.

“The book fair is really a win-win-win for the students, our school, and the community,” said Melissa Gatchell, event co-lead.  “The school raised money to stock the library, our kids purchased some new and exciting books, and the change drive allowed us to give back to the community on behalf of the Bonny Slope students.  It was a well-received and fun week for sure.”

Got S’more Time for Books? Bring Your Happy Campers to the BSE Book Fair!

We know that our library ‘special’ turns our BSE students into Happy Campers – and this is your chance to make a direct positive impact: every purchase at our 2017 Winter Book Fair benefits the school library. Your attendance and purchase(s) help maintain an expansive selection of good books in our school library, helping cultivate a life-long love of reading across our student body.

We’ve compiled some key information to help you get the most out of your 2017 Winter Scholastic Book Fair experience.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • NEW! “All for Books” Classroom Change Collection to Benefit Beaverton Closet
    • In addition to the traditional book fair, this year we are hosting an “All for Books” event from January 30 – February 10
    • Each classroom will be given an empty jar and kids will be encouraged to bring in spare change to fill the jar.
    • The class will use the collected coins to buy Book Fair books, which they will then donate to Beaverton Closet, a non-profit organization that provides clothes, books and other items to vulnerable children in our community.
    • The two classrooms with the most change collected at the end of two weeks will each be given $100 to spend on books for their classrooms.
    • Start collecting your spare change and send it to school with your student starting Jan. 30!

Tips for a Fantastic Fair

  • Volunteer! The Book Fair needs your help. There are plenty of opportunities for parents to get involved – check them out here
  • If your child plans to shop during school hours, please have them bring their book fair bankroll in a baggie or other container so they can transport it to and from school neatly and safely. You might also consider marking your child’s name on the baggie or container in case it gets lost – this makes it easier to return!

Thanks in advance for your support of the Book Fair. And a special shout out to Melissa Gatchell and Cindi Otis for co-chairing this great event!

BSE Book Fair Open For Business, Extended Hours Wednesday

The Scholastic Book Fair is officially open for business, and offers extended hours on Wednesday for your shopping convenience.  The weeklong event is Bonny Slope’s only library fundraiser, with proceeds funding library materials, reading-related programs, and going directly toward the purchase of new books for our library shelves, including this year's OBOB books. Last year, the event brought in close to $5000 for BSE.

Organizers Jenna Dornblaser and Jen Timmins are offering some fun incentives for both teachers and students to encourage participation this year.  A raffle was held for teachers who attended the Teacher Preview - and a $10 gift certificate for the Book Fair was up for grabs.  Additionally, two students from each grade will win a $5 Scholastic gift certificate by guessing how many eyeballs are in the monster-themed Book Fair.

“We both look forward to how excited the kids get. It makes all the effort and weeks leading up to the event worth it,” said Dornblaser.

Not only is reading vital to the success of our children, finding books of interest to them can turn reading into a favorite pastime.  “I love to lose myself in a book and want this so much for my own kids, all kids actually.  There’s just something wonderful and safe about snuggling into a comfy chair with characters that feel like friends. The adventures are endless!” said Timmins.

Shoppers will enjoy a larger, more convenient check out process this year.  With Technology in its new home, organizers had more room with which to work.

In addition to Wednesday’s extended hours, kids are able to shop before/after school and during recess.

Hours:
•    Monday Nov 2: 8am - 4pm
•    Tuesday Nov 3: 8am - 4pm
•    Wednesday Nov 4: 8am - 7:30pm
•    Thursday Nov 5: 8am - 4pm
•    Friday Nov 6: 8am - 2pm

Unable to make it in?  Shop online from the comfort of your home.

Thank you for supporting our BSE Library.
