Visit and Book Order Opportunity: Lija Fisher, Due 5/31

On Wednesday, May 1, 2019 we are excited to welcome author Lija Fisher to Bonny Slope. Lija was born in Istanbul, Turkey and raised at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. In 2017 she was a Writer in Residence with Aspen Words. Lija has lived in London, LA and NYC but now calls Colorado home. The Cryptid Catcher is her first novel.

The Cryptid Catcher is the first book in a monstrously fun middle-grade duology by Lija Fisher about a boy who inherits a job hunting legendary creatures.

After Clivo Wren's archaeologist father dies mysteriously, the newly orphaned thirteen-year-old finds out the truth: his dad was no archaeologist. He was actually a cryptid catcher, known for finding elusive beasts like t he bloodsucking chupacabra. His goal: discover the one extraordinary cryptid whose blood grants immortality--before the knowledge falls into the wrong hands. The mission remains unfinished, and now there's only one person who can take the renowned cryptid catcher's place: Clivo. He may not know the first thing about monster hunting, but he's willing to give it a try--because anything beats staying home with his salsa-crazy aunt and her neurotic cats.

Author visit by Suzanne Selfors

National bestselling author Suzanne Selfors visited Bonny Slope on October 10, 2018.  Suzanne is best known for her Imaginary Veterinary Series, Wedgie & Gizmo Series, Ever After High School Stories and many other books.  She has published over 30 books in multiple languages around the world.

Suzanne gave three enjoyable presentations to all grade levels teaching students about what life is like for an author, how she develops ideas for her books, what is involved in writing books, and the process of getting a book published.  Kids learned that even before they can write, they are creating stories through pictures they draw. She also showed kids some of her books that have been translated into other languages and published in foreign countries (Hebrew, German, French, UK, etc.) and how publishers change titles and sometimes hire different illustrators to change covers to reflect cultural appeal.

Each presentation she involved students in the process of creating ideas for stories and brought props and costumes to add a bit of fun!  Kids had fun dressing up as Sugar Fairies and characters, Ben and Pearl, from her Imaginary Veterinary Series.

Leilani and her guests decide to make Tutu’s recipe for Sleepover Soup, which requires each of them to collect one ingredient that has significant meaning in their lives. That is, until one fateful day when Lucky, her father, and her aunt leave their neat-and-tidy city life and travel to their new home out west-the Wild West.

At first Lucky is excited, but during the long train ride to her new hometown of Miradero, she begins to worry. What if she doesn't make any new friends? Everyone in the West rides horses, but she's never been allowed to even sit on one. How can she possibly fit in? Anxious about the future, Lucky looks out the train window and sees a majestic wild stallion. When their eyes meet, she senses a connection. But when the stallion is caught by wranglers, Lucky's heart breaks. And when she next sees the stallion, he's tied to a post, refusing to be "broken in."

Author and Illustrator Nick Bruel Visits Bonny Slope

NY Times bestselling author and illustrator Nick Bruel visited Bonny Slope on October 11, 2017.  Best known for his Bad Kitty series, Nick has published over 20 books, with his newest title coming out in January 2018.

He had four delightful presentations geared towards the grade levels he spoke to.  In the Kindergarten/1st grade presentation he read the original Bad Kitty picture book as well as a book he wrote with his Father titled “Otto and Bob.”  In the 2nd-4th grade sessions he read a chapter from one of his Bad Kitty chapter books.  In each of these three presentations he led an interactive activity with the kids where the group created their own unique short story through questions Nick asked them.  He taught the kids that the secret to writing stores is “Always ask yourself questions.”

Nick also showed how he draws Bad Kitty and then focused on her eyes, explaining that you could change her emotions through her eyes.  The 5th grade session was a cartoon symposium as he explained that they had probably outgrown reading his Bad Kitty series.  He came up with ideas by randomly finding an entry in a yellow pages book and showed how a cartoon could be created in less than two minutes.  The 5th graders drew their own cartoon with their first subject being a dentist, next subject an animal and then combining the two.  The kids seemed to thoroughly enjoy Nick Bruel’s captivating presentations!

Autographed books will be delivered to classrooms next Monday.
