October 2014 BSCO Community Update

President’s Report

The school year is off to a great start! The BSCO Fall Meeting was full of lively conversation and was attended by over 40 parents and staff members. The meeting minutes have been posted to the website under BSCO Business.  The Winter BSCO meeting is January 28, 2015 at 7pm.

Thank you to the many parents who attended BSCO's parent education evening last week.  Shawn Marshall, a specialist from the Children's Program, provided helpful information and tips for parents as they navigate the world of social media with their children.  This event was well attended by approximately 60 parents or a whopping 10% of BSE families. Please save the date for the next parent education offering on Wednesday, November 19th @ 7pm:  Setting Limits & Sticking to Them with Kim DeMarchi M.Ed., Certified Parent Educator, Certified Family Coach, and Radio Show Host.

Each year the BSCO extends a teacher fund of $500 to each of our classroom teachers. Teachers have been busy outfitting their classrooms with reading materials and other supplies for the school year. Additionally, we have fulfilled two teacher grant requests this Fall and one last Spring. The grants were to create a book room where teachers are able to check out sets of books for their classroom, reading materials for the new kindergarten classroom, and an on-line subscription for the Spanish program.

The BSCO website is updated regularly with pertinent information and is the best place to get current and accurate information about BSCO programs and activities. You are able to subscribe to the BSCO blog on the right side of the home page (you may need to scroll down until you see “subscribe”). Some of this information is duplicated in Paw Prints, Facebook or sent via e-mail.

VP of Fundraising Report

Fundraising at Bonny Slope is under way with our annual Bridge the Gap (formerly Write-a-Check) campaign.  To date, our community has raised $10,700.  Unfortunately this is not nearly half-way to our goal of $25,000.00.  In order to support our annual operating budget, not including money set aside for capital expenditures like the playground cover, we need to raise at least this much at each of our major fundraisers this year to keep many of our favorite programs alive.  We are encouraging our community to step up to the challenge and support Bridge the Gap this fall.  Donations may be made online at the BSCO community website and by writing a check and delivering to the school.  All donations are tax deductible.

Director of Committees Report

Thanks to all of our volunteers and the families who participated in yet another successful Walk to School Day! Our community certainly demonstrated commitment to, and excitement about, this wonderful event.
Please join us for Monster Mash at 6pm on Friday, October 24th.  As a reminder, tickets for children are $4.00 each (payable at the door) and parents are FREE!   We have some exciting new treats this year that your children are sure to love.  Volunteers are still needed!
We are excited to announce that the Student Directory will be available electronically via a password protected link on the BSCO website the week of October 20th.  Hard copies of the directory will also be available for purchase.  
We have identified two co-chairs for Artist in Residence and will be evaluating opportunities for this years program in the coming weeks.  Stay tuned for more information! We are in need of a lead for the yearbook for the 2015-2016 school year.  Please let Christy Bishop know if you have any interest in the position and she’ll get you connected in order to shadow the yearbook development process during this school year.

Volunteer Coordinator Report

The Party Coordinator position for some classrooms has been filled, still looking for others. Party planning meeting is TBD but will occur before the Winter classroom party.  The BSCO is funding classroom parties this year so there will be no extra charge to parents.

The Volunteer room is now being used for Geography Club checks each month.  If you are planning to hold a meeting in the Volunteer Room, please check the Geography Club schedule. The next Geo date is 10/22.
