The Cultural Richness Committee works to increase cultural awareness and understanding within the Bonny Slope community with a goal of creating a more inclusive and welcoming school for all !!!

The Cultural Richness committee creates programs that expose students to different cultures, but that's not the only thing we do. We try to "sprinkle" cultural awareness in existing activities that are already occurring at Bonny Slope by partnering with other committees!  Please read more to learn about what we are doing, and let us know if you would like to share your time or skills to create more inclusive Bonny Slope Community!

Jog-A-Thon

Jog-A-Thon assigns a country for each classroom. We have partnered with Jog-A-Thon to use this opportunity to expose students to information about the country/region and its culture. We think it will help to develop awareness and understanding about the many cultural backgrounds in our school. For the students born in those countries, we hope it would bring a positive experience of sharing their background and culture. We provide the classroom with a flag of the country, and we try to organize a guest speaker to share about the country.

Our volunteering opportunities are listed on this SignUp Genius:

National Mix It Up Day

This national movement encourages students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications that can promote healthy, welcoming school environments. This year National Mix It Up occurs Tuesday October 23rd!

Mother Language Day

This worldwide annual observance held on 21 February, promotes awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism. The Cultural Richness Committee will plan a week of school-wide activities. Students will be provided the opportunity to share more about their mother tongue, or that of their family.

Cultural Family Night

An event for the whole family. A celebration to embrace the cultures represented in our school community. It will happen in the same week as Mother Language Day. Stay tuned for more information!!!

Primary Years Program:

One of the goals of the PYP program at Bonny is to promote the diversity of cultures within the school. The Cultural Richness Committee is working with the PYP coordinator to find how we can support and help teachers in the cultural activities they are already promoting in the classroom.

Bobcat Explorer

Our Bobcat Explorer mural is a place where students can share photos of their cultural experiences, near and far, around the globe.

Art Literature

The Art Literature program usually teaches kids about a particular author every month. But once a year they expose the students to the culture of a country. The Cultural Richness Committee will partner with them to help them plan and promote the country's culture in many ways possible, for example, music, clothing, dances, and much more.

Library Showcase (Monthly)

Monthly display of books in the school library which reflect the region of the world of study of Bonny Slope Geography Club- Students can read and check out literature to learn about countries and cultures.

Culture Boxes (Monthly)

These boxes, provided by World Oregon, increase global literacy for their K-12 students. These boxes are filled with hands-on, authentic treasures and lessons about the art, culture and daily life of people from around the world. Each month a country will be selected from the region of study that aligns with Geo Club and the culture box will be exhibited in the glass showcase under the stairs. Teachers may request the box for their classroom as well to further engage learning!
