Bonny Slope’s 2016-17 Oregon Battle of the Books tournament culminated with an exciting finish.  Fifth grade champion, the Flabbergasted Phoenix Dragon Wizards, took the Bonny Slope Grand Championship title last Friday, narrowly defeating fourth grade champs, the Candy Readers.

Battles began last January as the fourth and fifth grade teams participated in separate double-elimination tournaments.  124 students voluntarily participated in OBOB this year, with a total of 28 teams and over 55 battles.  The eventual fourth grade champion takes on the fifth grade champion to reveal who will represent Bonny Slope at the OBOB Regional tournament this weekend.

The Flabbergasted Phoenix Dragon Wizards, comprised of Mina B, Arunima D., Natalie M., and Sagarika M., lost early and battled up through the loser’s bracket to take the fifth grade championship, forcing a rematch against runners-up the Magic Duels.

Fourth grade champions, the Candy Readers, showed heart and determination throughout the entire tournament.  Amy C., Julia C., Sakya J., Emery R., and Metta T. defeated the fourth grade runners-up, the Book Bloomers, in a close tie-breaker round and entered the Championship final undefeated.

“We are so proud of all our participants for giving OBOB a try, taking a chance on themselves and challenging themselves to do something extra.  To have such an exciting last week proves how well-prepared and dedicated our final teams were,” shares OBOB co-chair, Hannah Donohue.

A huge thanks is due to all the participants, their parents, the fourth and fifth grade teachers and BSCO’s OBOB chairs, Hannah Donohue, Barb Simon-Evrenosoglu, Frances Bland, and Amy Buringrud.  OBOB is supported through your generous BSCO donation.
