Wednesday, October 7th is Walk to School Day! This annual event, celebrated by thousands of schools internationally, promotes walking (or biking) for several reasons:
- Increase physical activity
- Reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools - Increase community and school area traffic safety
- Teach safe transportation skills to children
- Increase awareness of how walkable a community is
The Bonny Slope Earth Sustainability Team (BEST) needs volunteers. Typically 1 or 2 adults (parents, teachers and staff) lead each of five walk routes, while 3 to 5 adults help with the after-event celebration at school. Walk routes range from 0.6 to 0.9 miles and leave anywhere between 7:50-8:10am depending on start location. The after-event entails setting up tables for small prizes (~8am), directing kids through the prize line and onto the track or playground (8:15-8:30am), then cleanup afterwards (8:30-8:45am).
This is a fun annual event and a great way to kick off an active year while engaging with neighbors and friends!!!
