I hope you are enjoying the holiday season! Bonny Slope is full of holiday cheer with the Winter Choir preparing for their concerts, BSCO volunteers baking and delivering holiday cookies to the staff, and party coordinators in the thick of planning festive Winter Parties .
I want to remind everyone that the next Winter BSCO Commuity Meeting is January 28, 2015 at 7pm in the BSE Library. Please plan to attend.
With our Technology budget we are purchasing 50 additional iPad minis for student use in the classrooms after Winter Break. Two new mobile carts will be added grades K-2.
Having two carts located downstairs dedicated to the lower grades will make the devices more accessible to these students. Additionally we will be adding additional devices to each of the two existing carts to bring those carts to 30 devices each to better accommodate current class sizes.
The BSCO has fulfilled a few teacher grant requests since our last update. We have extended a grant to Third Grade to provide bussing for a field trip touring downtown Portland for their city planning unit (unfortunately this is being rescheduled due to weather). To Fifth Grade, the grant will purchase books nominated for the 2015 Newberry Award that ties into their reading program. Mrs. Arnold’s class will do a crop lifecycles project using the garden, and Mr. Basham’s class will explore the food web through dissection of owl pellets.
Each year, the BSCO budgets $5,000 for Teacher Grants, and they are available to all staff members. Grant requests are first approved by the principal and then the BSCO president or Board.
BSCO's second parent education evening was a success and was widely attended by parents and staff. Kim DeMarchi, M.Ed., Certified Parent Educator, Certified Family Coach, and Radio Show Host provided helpful information and tips for parents on setting limits and sticking to them.
Please save the date for the final parent education offering on Motivation, by Jess Sosne, at 7pm on Monday, February 9th.
The BSCO will be hosting its second annual Bobcat Soiree and Auction on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 5 to 9pm (with an after party from 9-11pm) at The Tiffany Center. This year’s theme – A MAD AFFAIR – will pay homage to the polished world of 1960’s Mad Men. Get out those sophisticated dresses & skinny ties, and get ready to raise money for our students!
VP of Fundraising Report
Fundraising at Bonny Slope is a vital part of why BSCO continues to be able to offer high quality resources and support to our school. We rely on three fundraisers to accomplish this: Bridge the Gap, Bobcat Soiree, and Jog-a-Thon. The first, Bridge the Gap, raised a total of $15,245 in donations and an additional $5,275 in matching funds. Thank you to our community for this amazing support! Our goal for BTG was $25,000, and though we came up short in donations to this early fundraiser, there are still ways that you can contribute! Bobcat Soiree and Jog-a-Thon offer another unique way to give toward BSCO programs. We will need to step up our goals to support the overall operating budget and keep the programs and support our community loves intact. We can do it!
Director of Committees Report
We had a busy November with many successful Bonny Slope events. Our Book Fair was very well attended and the excitement of the students was contagious. Monster Mash was a popular family event and more than broke even. Many thanks to our 5th graders and all of our Bonny Slope families who helped to make the Pancake Breakfast a huge success! Your participation and the assistance towards funding the Outdoor School program is much appreciated! Thank you, also, for your generous candy donations and the letters for the troops.
We are still in need of a lead for the yearbook for the 2015-2016 school year. Please let Christy Bishop know if you have any interest in the position and she’ll get you connected in order to shadow the yearbook development process during this school year.
As a reminder, the Student Directory is available electronically via a password protected link on the BSCO website. Please contact your child's teacher for the password.
The playground cover effort continues in the background - we are making progress! Beaverton School District has 3 approved cover vendors and we have received designs and bids from each to consider. We have also secured 3 installation bids to get a sense of the total cost of the project. Unknowns remain but budgetary numbers appear to be within the amount approved at the May BSCO meeting so we are continuing onward, working with the District to get a project manager assigned.
There is good news / less good news. With the bond passing in May (yeah!), the District has many, many capital improvement projects. The District has informed us that the soonest the cover can be installed is Summer 2015. We'll continue our effort to align with the District's timeline to have it completed as soon as possible.
Volunteer Coordinator Report
Party Coordinator positions have been filled for all classrooms except Mr. Basham’s class. It is still in need of a coordinator for the Valentine’s Day Party. The coordinators are currently working with their grade level teams to organize the Winter classroom party. Stay tuned for notifications from your classroom coordinators with Winter Party schedules. Volunteers are always needed to help with these events so please reach out to your coordinator if you are able to assist. The BSCO is funding classroom parties this year so there will be no extra charge to parents.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our volunteers at Bonny Slope! Your time and efforts are very much appreciated! The following volunteers have already logged in over 40 hours at Bonny Slope: Begona Paz, Erinn Peters, Jennifer Frey, Amy Buringrud, Jenifer Manghelli, Yolanda Leal, Gretchen Gallagher, Ava Palmquist, Jessica Gaibler, Jenna Dornblaser, Donald Carder, Kim Kennedy and Jennifer Timmins. We would also like to recognize Hannah Donohue who has recorded over 100 hours of her time volunteering at Bonny Slope!
